4. Measure clearances after the boiler is set in place
Clearances are listed in the installation manual, but the dimensions are measured from the jacket, not from the wall you wish was straight. I once mounted a boiler with four inches of clearance behind it. The manual wanted six. The cooling fan could not be removed without pulling the entire unit. That was a $300 labor bill before the boiler ever ran.
Measure from the jacket. Check the door swing. Check the access panel. And then test whether a service tech can actually reach anything.
5. Test the cooling fan before you close the panels
A condensing boiler's blower is not just a cooling fan. It is part of the combustion-air proving system. After replacing a blower motor last fall, I almost closed the housing without checking rotation. So glad I didn't. The wire colors looked right, but the motor was spinning backwards.
If you have ever asked how does a dehumidifier work, the logic is identical: a fan pulls air across a cold coil, and if air moves in the wrong direction, nothing works. In a dehumidifier, you get no water removal. In a boiler, you get a pressure-switch fault and a callback.

The same principle applies to a dehumidifier drain: water has to leave without low spots. A condensing boiler is basically a dehumidifier running in reverse. The flue gas cools, water condenses, and the drain has to slope the whole way.
7. Pressure test, photograph, and write down what you did
I used to skip the final pressure test if the boiler fired and the house got warm. That changed after a customer called back with a gas smell two weeks later. The joint had not been leak-tested. The whole unit had to be opened up again.
Now I pressure test every gas connection, even the ones that look hand-tight. I have caught 47 potential errors using this checklist in the past 18 months, and at least ten of them were leak-related. Photograph the nameplate, the wiring, and the parts diagram sticker on the inside of the jacket. Future-you will need that photo.
The Cheap Quote Trap
